Jamal Musiala undergoes planned surgery ahead of Bayern Munich return

The 23-year-old midfielder had the minor procedure on Monday as part of the long-term medical treatment following the serious injury he suffered at last year's FIFA Club World Cup.

The operation had been scheduled well in advance and was carried out after Germany's World Cup campaign ended with a surprise round-of-32 defeat to Paraguay.

Musiala's latest surgery was part of the recovery process from the fractured fibula and broken, dislocated ankle he sustained during Bayern's quarter-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at the Club World Cup. The injury ruled him out of 32 matches across all competitions last season as he worked his way back to full fitness.

Bayern said the operation was routine and confirmed that Musiala would now begin a carefully managed pre-season programme. The club expect him to follow a structured training plan designed to have him ready for the start of the new campaign.

If his recovery continues as planned, Musiala is expected to be available when Bayern face Borussia Dortmund in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup on 22 August, the club's first competitive fixture of the 2026/27 season.

The Germany international is one of several Bayern players spending the summer working towards full fitness. Lennart Karl and Serge Gnabry are also continuing their rehabilitation programmes at the club's Sabener Strasse training base.

Bayern's remaining first-team squad are due to report back for pre-season training on 20 July before travelling to East Asia for the club's Audi Summer Tour in August.
