JP Pietersen fumes over Ethan Hooker injury as Sharks suffer costly Ospreys defeat

Hooker dislocated his shoulder shortly after scoring a try, landing awkwardly following contact from an Ospreys defender. Pietersen was left particularly aggrieved by the circumstances surrounding the incident, arguing that player welfare rules were not properly enforced.

"Ethan's injury was a massive blow for us," Pietersen said. "After scoring a try, the rules say you are not supposed to dive on a player. Rules are there to protect players and sadly that did not happen.

"He dislocated his shoulder. He is a massive presence for us and to lose him after the first half was very disappointing and frustrating."

The 21-year-old is expected to be sidelined for an extended period, potentially up to four months, a significant setback for both the Sharks and their international ambitions.

Beyond the injury, the Sharks were left to reflect on a match they largely controlled but failed to finish off. Pietersen pointed to a lack of ruthlessness inside the Ospreys 22 as the key difference.

"We got a lot of territory and possession and played some great rugby," he said. "But we were not clinical or ruthless enough when opportunities came."

Handling errors and lapses in concentration repeatedly stalled promising attacks, allowing the Ospreys to stay in touch and ultimately edge the contest.

"There seemed to be a lack of concentration," Pietersen added. "We lost the ball and let them off, instead of converting those opportunities into points."

The Sharks briefly seized momentum in the second half after introducing Springbok props Ox Nché and Vincent Koch, with the pack immediately overpowering the Ospreys in the scrum and winning multiple penalties.

However, Pietersen questioned a turning point when uncontested scrums were called after injuries in the Ospreys front row, removing what had become a clear Sharks advantage.

"We had unbelievable scrums - we dominated them and pushed them off the ball," he said. "We were five metres out and confident we could get a penalty that might have changed the game."

He added that the situation "certainly took the contest away from the game," though he stopped short of making firm accusations.

Amid the disappointment, Pietersen praised teenage fullback Zekhethelo Siyaya for an impressive debut, highlighting his composure and attacking confidence.

"He's just a kid, but he didn't look like a kid out there," Pietersen said. "He plays with freedom and exuberance, and that's very good to see."

The defeat leaves the Sharks' URC play-off hopes hanging by a thread as the season nears its conclusion. They now face a difficult run-in, beginning with Edinburgh away, before returning home to meet Benetton and Zebre.

For Pietersen, though, the night will be remembered most for Hooker's injury - and a growing list of missed opportunities that continue to define the Sharks' season.
