Junior Khanye backs Mamelodi Sundowns duo for Bafana Bafana World Cup squad

Junior Khanye backs Mamelodi Sundowns duo for Bafana Bafana World Cup squad

The former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder was particularly impressed with the duo's display in Sundowns' 1-0 CAF Champions League semi-final first-leg victory over Espérance de Tunis in Tunis.

Khanye believes both defenders delivered performances worthy of man-of-the-match recognition, especially under pressure in the second half when Esperance pushed for an equaliser.

"The two centre-backs did very well. For me, both of them were man of the match," he said on iDiski TV.

"In the second half, Esperance came with a different plan and tested them mentally."

While acknowledging that Sundowns rode their luck at times, Khanye argued that the ability to withstand such pressure in a hostile away environment should not go unnoticed — particularly by national team coach Hugo Broos.

Cupido, who recently returned from injury, received special mention from Khanye, who believes the defender's quality is undeniable despite concerns over fitness.

"I'll be surprised if Broos doesn't take both of them. Even if Cupido is left out, he's a quality player. You can't perform like that away at Esperance and be overlooked," he added.

However, Khanye did point out areas for improvement, highlighting moments of ball-watching and defensive positioning that could be exposed at international level.

With squad selections for the global showpiece looming, competition for places remains fierce.

For Cupido and Kekana, their performances on the continental stage may yet prove decisive — but as Khanye suggests, consistency will be key if they are to secure their spots on football's biggest stage.
