Newcastle turn to French talent as Aladji Bamba deal with Monaco nears completion

The 20-year-old Frenchman is expected on Tyneside on Thursday to undergo a medical before completing a long-term move.

The transfer remained under wraps throughout negotiations, with details only emerging once Bamba was already travelling to Newcastle. Despite the imminent arrival, the Magpies are still expected to strengthen further before the transfer window closes.

Bamba's arrival underlines a clear shift in Newcastle's recruitment policy. Rather than pursuing established, expensive players, the club is prioritising emerging continental prospects aged 20 or younger. It marks a contrast to last off-season's 55 million-pound move for 29-year-old Yoane Wissa from Brentford.

The former Monaco youngster joins a growing group of developmental signings that includes Sean Steur, Ewen Jaouen and Bazoumana Toure. Newcastle believe all four possess significant long-term potential but will require time to adjust to the speed and physical demands of the Premier League.

The search for another promising midfielder intensified after Sandro Tonali's sale to Tottenham last month. Newcastle had already recruited 18-year-old Steur from Ajax and also explored a move for Freiburg's Johan Manzambi, who instead opted to join Aston Villa.

Although Bamba has made just 12 competitive starts for Monaco since making his senior debut in August 2025, his underlying numbers have impressed.

Among Ligue 1 midfielders who played at least 500 minutes last season, he ranked among the top five for duels won (9.1 per match), tackles (3.6), successful take-ons (1.6) and aerial duels won (1.9), reinforcing Newcastle's willingness to invest in promising talent before their market value climbs even higher.
