The fixture carries special significance for Senegal. It will be the first World Cup meeting between the two nations since the famous 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan, when the Lions of Teranga stunned defending champions France with a memorable 1-0 victory in their opening group match.
Senegal return to the World Cup for the fourth time after previous appearances in 2002, 2018 and 2022. Their greatest achievement came on their debut, when they reached the quarter-finals before losing narrowly to Turkey 1-0.
Despite the challenge of facing one of the tournament favourites, Thiaw has insisted Senegal are not intimidated.
"We're playing against France, but the competition isn't just about France," he said. "There will also be difficult matches against Norway and Iraq. It would not be a surprise if Senegal beat France."
The coach pointed to Senegal's recent success as evidence that his players can compete with the world's best teams.
"We have world-class players and we're African champions," he said. "We've qualified for the World Cup three times in a row and reached three AFCON finals in the last four tournaments. We have earned our status.
"We can face any team. We are ambitious but not arrogant. We can beat anyone, but we can also lose if we don't do things properly. We are ready to start this competition well."
Senegal have received a major boost ahead of the match with captain Kalidou Koulibaly declared fit after injury concerns. Veteran midfielder Idrissa Gueye is also available for selection.
"I have my entire squad available," said Thiaw. "All the players are fit, and now it is up to my staff and me to make the right choices."
While acknowledging France's strength, the Senegal coach believes his team's unity can make the difference.
"We know we are facing a very strong team with world-class players, but we have top players too," he said. "Our strength is our team spirit. The match against France means a lot, but we will keep our focus on football and do everything possible to achieve victory."
After facing France, Senegal will continue their Group I campaign against Norway on June 22 before meeting Iraq on June 26 as they attempt to reach the knockout stages once again.
