Rising Stormers star Jonathan Roche determined to pursue Springbok dream

The 23-year-old, who has impressed in the United Rugby Championship and Champions Cup, is eligible for Ireland through his paternal grandmother and for Zimbabwe via his father's side of the family.

Despite interest from Ireland and an earlier approach from Zimbabwe, Roche's preference remains to play for South Africa if he can.

Matt Norton, global Head of Rugby at Roc Nation Sports International, confirmed the situation to Rugby365: "Yes, he is eligible for Ireland. At the moment Roche would like to play for the Springboks.

"He is a Cape Town boy and a South African through-and-through. His dad's side is from Zimbabwe," Norton said. "He turned that down as well.

"Roche is doing well at the Stormers, his family is here, and he's playing well for the Stormers."

Roche's current Stormers contract expires at the end of the season, but Norton stated that a new deal is on the cards: "He will extend at the Stormers. Who he plays his international rugby for down the line, who knows?

"He would love it to be the Springboks. If it is someone else, then so be it.

"We are facilitating those conversations and doing what is best for Johnny on and off the field.

"We need to appreciate the fact that every player is unique and has his own goals and ambitions. With what and who that aligns to, we don't know yet.

"It is good to see the Stormers backing him and giving him some good game time."

Roche, a former Bishops captain who progressed through UCT and Western Province, made his Stormers debut in late 2024.

He has featured regularly in the midfield and scored two tries in the Stormers' 49-12 Champions Cup win over Bristol Bears.

He was also invited to a Springbok alignment camp in 2025, underlining his rising status in South African rugby.
