South African football mourns the loss of rising star Jayden Adams

Instead, South African football is mourning the loss of one of its brightest midfield talents after Adams passed away at the age of 25.

The midfielder had featured in all three of Bafana Bafana's group-stage matches at the World Cup before remaining an unused substitute in the Round of 32 defeat to Canada. Following the tournament, Adams was among eight Sundowns players granted an extended break and had been expected to report for the club's pre-season training camp in Austria next week.

Instead of welcoming him back, the football fraternity has been left devastated by several reports of his passing, with tributes pouring in from teammates, former clubs and supporters.

Adams' rise through South African football was a remarkable one. A product of the Stellenbosch FC academy, he signed his first professional contract in 2020 and quickly established himself as one of the Premier Soccer League's most accomplished midfielders.

He went on to make 139 appearances for Stellenbosch, the second-most in the club's history, playing a pivotal role in their growth into one of the country's top sides. His performances earned him a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in January last year.

Success followed him to Chloorkop, where he helped the Brazilians lift the Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League titles in less than two years, further cementing his reputation as one of the country's finest midfielders.

On the international stage, Adams was equally influential. He played a key role in South Africa's third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire before representing Bafana Bafana at the FIFA World Cup.

His death marks the loss of not only a decorated footballer but also a player many believed was entering the prime of his career. South African football has been robbed of a talent whose best years still lay ahead.
