McDonald is weighing up his selection options as planning begins for the Cricket World Cup in late 2027.
The vacancy was created after Glenn Maxwell retired from ODIs in 2025. Green's case is strengthened by his versatility across batting roles and a 47-ball century against South Africa in August last year, which McDonald cited as evidence of his explosive hitting.
His all-round ability, including useful bowling, also helps manage fifth-bowler overs in a side reliant on all-rounders for balance.
"It's really where we position him and what role we want him to play, because I think he's got the ability to really play high up the order and low," McDonald said via Cricbuzz.
"He does have some power, we saw in that Top End series last year against South Africa, his ability to finish off that innings in the absence of Glenn Maxwell.
"So we had that conversation. We keep these things open - experiment is not the right word - but we'll look at different ways to play in the journey to the 2027 World Cup and where he fits exactly in that."
Australia are also considering bringing Tim David back into the ODI setup. The T20 International regular has played four ODIs, all in 2023, and previously stepped away from the 50-over format due to franchise commitments, as selectors explore batting depth options ahead of upcoming ODI cycle and squad restructuring phase under McDonald.
"It is something we're looking at," added McDonald.
“Tim hasn't made himself available for ODI cricket as yet in amongst everything that he's doing. But open-minded that potentially that is a conversation down the track.”
