Eddie Howe: Sandro Tonali always fully committed to Newcastle despite Arsenal link

Tonali had been linked with Arsenal late in the window, but Newcastle made it clear the Italy international was not for sale, and no formal approach was received before the deadline passed.

Speaking after the window shut, Howe confirmed he had spoken directly to the player and had no concerns about his focus or mindset.

"I spoke to Sandro and his only focus was on us and on winning games," Howe said.
"He's absolutely focused on the here and now and playing for Newcastle."

The Newcastle manager added that the midfielder showed no signs of distraction as the club prepared for the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City on Wednesday.

"His only focus was on Manchester City and trying to win that game," Howe said.
"There's absolutely no issue with Sandro himself. He's very happy and committed."

Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in 2023 on a five-year contract and has now made ninety-two appearances for the club in all competitions. After serving a ten-month betting ban, the midfielder signed a one-year contract extension, with Newcastle also holding an option to extend his deal until 2030.

The strong contractual position leaves Newcastle firmly in control of Tonali's future.

While his agent, Giuseppe Riso, previously suggested discussions about the player's long-term future could take place later in the year, Howe made it clear the club's stance remains unchanged.

"Our best players are always going to attract attention from other clubs," Howe said.
"That's the reality of football. But we want to keep the group together and keep progressing."

With the January window now closed, Tonali remains a key part of Howe's plans as Newcastle push for silverware and a strong finish to the season.
