After winning the toss, Shubman Gill chose to bowl, and the decision paid off early as the seamers found movement. Chennai’s top order struggled for rhythm, though Sanju Samson reached a milestone in the second over, becoming the fastest Indian to 5,000 IPL runs. He was dismissed soon after for 11.

Wickets fell at regular intervals, with Kagiso Rabada leading the attack. Ruturaj Gaikwad held the innings together with an unbeaten 74 from 60 balls, while Jamie Overton added a quick 18 off 6 late on to push CSK to 158 for 7.

In response, Gill and Sudharsan gave Gujarat a strong start, adding 55 in the Powerplay without loss. Noor Ahmad provided a breakthrough by stumping Gill for 33, but that was CSK’s only success of note.

Sudharsan and Jos Buttler then took control. Sudharsan scored 87 off 46 balls, attacking the spinners, while Buttler contributed an unbeaten 39. Their 97-run stand ensured a comfortable finish, with Gujarat closing on 162 for 2 in 16.4 overs.

Rabada was named Player of the Match for his 3 for 25.

In the other IPL clash on Sunday, Kolkata Knight Riders beat Lucknow Super Giants with a tally of 155 for 8 via Super Over.

KKR were 129 for 7 after 19 overs before Rinku Singh lifted them with a decisive final over, hitting Digvesh Rathi for four consecutive sixes. His unbeaten 83 from 51 balls, his highest T20 score, took KKR to 155 for 7.

LSG also forced a tie in the last over. Needing 17, Kartik Tyagi bowled two no-balls and dismissed Himmat Singh, but with seven required off the final delivery, Mohammed Shami hit a six to level the scores.

In the Super Over, Sunil Narine dismissed Nicholas Pooran first ball and Aiden Markram soon after, with just a single conceded. Markram’s wicket came via a relay catch from Rovman Powell to Rinku, who had already taken four catches earlier.

Chasing a small target, Rinku finished the match by hitting Prince Yadav’s first ball for four.
