Orlando Pirates reclaim second spot with convincing win over Magesi

The Buccaneers made several changes to the side that had faced Sekhukhune United, with Relebohile Mofokeng, Oswin Appollis and Yanela Mbuthuma restored to the starting line-up.

Patrick Maswanganyi, Kamogelo Sebelebele and Evidence Makgopa were the notable absentees from the previous matchday squad. The adjustments paid immediate dividends as Pirates dominated possession and territory for large spells.

The opening goal arrived as early as the eighth minute. Mofokeng delivered a dangerous cross into the area and Mbuthuma timed his run perfectly to guide a near-post finish beyond Magesi goalkeeper Chipezeze to make it 1-0.

Mbuthuma was a constant threat and went close to doubling his tally when his downward header was well saved by Chipezeze.

Pirates doubled their advantage four minutes before half-time through Mofokeng, who capped an impressive first-half display by latching onto a forward pass and firing a composed low shot into the bottom corner.

Tshepang Moremi also tested Chipezeze with a curling effort before the break, while Mbuthuma later headed wide from another pinpoint Moremi delivery.

After the interval, Pirates continued to create chances. Oswin Appollis curled an effort narrowly wide from close range, and debutant Andre De Jong missed a close-range opportunity shortly after coming on.

De Jong replaced Mbuthuma just after the hour mark, while Masindi Nemtajela came on for Thalente Mbatha. Sebelebele was introduced at half-time for Deano Van Rooyen.

Magesi FC, known as Dikwena Tsa Meetse, struggled to contain Pirates' movement and attacking intent.

The victory saw Orlando Pirates move back up to second place on the table, regaining the position from rivals Kaizer Chiefs and underlining their credentials as genuine title contenders.
