Shubman Gill admits India's death bowling needs to improve

Chasing 352, the visitors reached the target in 48.2 overs, powered by an unbeaten 162 from captain Shai Hope. It was West Indies' highest successful chase in ODIs and handed them a consolation victory in the series India won 2-1.

Reflecting on the defeat, Gill said his side felt in a commanding position for long periods before letting it slip away at the end.

"I think the game was in control. But you know, being behind four overs with this and then in the last, I think they took the game away from us," he said.

"Had we, you know, not been short on the overs, I think the game might have gone to the last over."

The India skipper was particularly concerned about the team's approach with the ball in the closing stages.

"I feel sometimes we are not really clear whether we are attacking or we are defending, especially when we are bowling in the death overs," Gill said.

"One-day is such a game; if the opposition is five or six down, you are never really sure what fields to take, whether we are going for the death too early or we are still, you know, bowling kind of like middle overs.

"I think these are some areas which definitely we need to be better at."

Fielding was another major area of concern for the captain, especially with the ODI World Cup on the horizon.

"I think there are still some areas - I think our fielding could be much better," Gill admitted.

"Overall in the series, I think we dropped six or seven catches, which is not a good sign leading up to the World Cup. You want your fielding to be top-notch."

Gill himself had a brief stay at the crease, falling early for just 1 after edging behind. He was philosophical about the dismissal.

"I mean, you're always disappointed whenever you get out early, but I think today I don't think there could have been much that I would have done on that ball," he said.
