Abdeslam Ouaddou encouraged by Orlando Pirates' growing team chemistry in Spain

The Buccaneers have been in Marbella for the third successive year as they prepare for a demanding 2026/27 campaign, where they will aim to challenge for the Betway Premiership title while also competing in the CAF Champions League.

Pirates have already played two friendly matches, drawing 1-1 with Spanish Segunda Division outfit Cordoba CF before defeating Cadiz CF 2-1 on Saturday.

The fixtures have provided Ouaddou with the perfect opportunity to assess his squad, including several new signings and promising youngsters promoted from the club's DStv Diski Challenge side.

Defender Mpho Chabatsane, goalkeeper Siyabonga Dladla, striker Boitumelo Radiopane and winger Daniel Msendami were among those who featured, while newcomers Matome Mmolai, Neo Rapoo, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Bohlale Ngwato, Sbangani Zulu and Gamphani Lungu also received valuable minutes.

Reflecting on the performances, Ouaddou said he has been impressed by the team's defensive organisation, fighting spirit and ability to execute quick transitions.

"I think the players gave me really good answers. We can see that step by step, we are increasing the intensity. We are close to the intensity of the league, and we are starting in two weeks," Ouaddou told SuperSportBET.

The Moroccan mentor added that his players are gradually adapting to his tactical demands, with the squad showing greater compactness and aggression without the ball.

Despite the positive signs, Ouaddou admitted there is still room for improvement. He pointed to Pirates' slow start against Cadiz, where they conceded inside the opening 10 minutes, as something that must be corrected before the season begins.

"We have to start with high intensity and be focused. Unfortunately, we were not focused in the first 10 minutes. We conceded a goal, and as an ex-defender, I'm never happy when we concede," he said.

Pirates will continue their preparations with friendlies against Al Ittihad, UD Las Palmas and Neom SC before concluding their Spanish tour.
