Abdeslam Ouaddou explains Abdoulaye Mariko's slow start at Orlando Pirates

Abdeslam Ouaddou explains Abdoulaye Mariko's slow start at Orlando Pirates

Mariko joined the Buccaneers from Malian side Djoliba AC ahead of the current campaign but has found regular game time difficult to come by after featuring early in the season.

The 22-year-old Mali international made an appearance off the bench in Pirates' goalless draw against Durban City at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, with Ouaddou impressed by his contribution.

"At the beginning of the season, we gave Mariko an opportunity against Marumo Gallants when he had just arrived at Pirates," said Ouaddou after the match.

"He needed time to adapt to the pace of the PSL, the aggression and the environment. Maybe we introduced him too quickly at that stage, but today he showed real improvement compared to his previous appearances."

Ouaddou highlighted the midfielder's attacking contribution and energy during the match.

"Today he had the freedom to play forward, he found passes between the lines and brought dynamism to the team. It's very positive for the club and he just needs to continue working hard," he added.

Despite being pleased with Mariko's display, the Pirates coach was left frustrated by his side's overall first-half performance against Durban City.

The Buccaneers remain in the hunt for the Betway Premiership title but now sit two points behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns following the draw. Pirates must beat Orbit College in their final game of the season and hope results elsewhere go their way to end a 14-year wait for league glory.

"We prepared well for the game, but the first half was below my expectations in terms of intensity and rhythm," Ouaddou admitted.

"The plan was to apply high pressure in the opening 15 to 20 minutes and try to score early, but we started too slowly and lacked aggression. That affected our ability to create clear chances."

Ouaddou, however, was encouraged by his team's response after the break.

"In the second half, especially in the final 30 minutes, we saw the Pirates we are used to seeing  -  full of intensity, pushing forward and trying to hurt the opponent. We had around 30 shots and 12 on target, but unfortunately it was not enough to win the match."
