Ademola Lookman not enough, says ex-Nigeria star Etim Esin

Ex-Super Eagles international Etim Esin believes the Nigerian senior national football team are still lacking a true creative spark in midfield, warning that the team’s long-standing playmaking issues remain unresolved despite the presence of Ademola Lookman.

Speaking on the Play Zone Podcast as reported by All Nigeria Soccer, the former player expressed concern that the Super Eagles have yet to find a classic number 10 capable of dictating games in the mould of past greats.

He referenced players such as Henry Nwosu and Jay-Jay Okocha as examples of the type of midfielder currently missing from the squad.

"I think we are still looking for that creative talented midfield player. Lookman comes into that but not really for Nigeria," said Esin.

"For his club, he does that very well, but when it comes to Nigeria, I think we still need that creativity in the middle of the park."

Esin, who starred for Iwuanyanwu Nationale during his playing days, explained that a traditional playmaker plays a crucial role in shaping a team’s attacking identity. According to him, such a player acts as both the "architect and magician," capable of unlocking defences and controlling the tempo of matches.

"He is the architect and magician in the squad. He makes things happen. Even if he does not score, he can lay an assist and make things happen in the game. If you have that in your squad, you will have the confidence," he added.

The former midfielder further emphasised the psychological impact a quality number 10 can have on opponents.

"Number ten like me, Henry, Jay-Jay — if we are with the ball the opponent will be intimidated," he said.

"You have to intimidate the opponent and let them know you have this kind of player that can drag two or three players, create space and lay a pass for someone. I think we still need that in our national team."

Lookman, who debuted against Ghana national football team in 2025, has contributed 11 goals and 10 assists in 43 appearances.
