Eric Chelle reveals plans for upcoming Super Eagles friendlies

The Super Eagles missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but have lined up fixtures against European opposition as they look to improve on the global rankings.

"For the big warm up games in June against Poland and Portugal, I will feature my first team players," said Chelle in a press release to Nigerian media.

"These are games that can push us up the global ranking if we win them."

Nigeria is currently ranked 26th in the world and third in Africa following their impressive performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where they claimed Bronze.

Chelle also explained that they will use the Unity Cup in London next month as an opportunity to evaluate new players and options, with Nigeria set to face Zimbabwe in the semi-final on May 26.

"The Unity Cup provides a platform to assess new players," added Chelle's statement.

"I will comb Europe and invite new players of Nigerian descent, alongside those who were previously called up but never got the chance to feature.

"Top players from the Nigeria Premier Football League will also be considered as I will be watching a number of domestic league games from now until the end of the season."

The Super Eagles could face either Jamaica or India in the final should they progress past Zimbabwe in the friendly international tournament.
