Algeria call on CAF to investigate referees in formal complaint after AFCON quarter-final defeat

Algeria call on CAF to investigate referees in formal complaint after AFCON quarter-final defeat

Strikes from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealed the win for the Super Eagles, but Algeria have hit out at what they believe to have been biased officiating.

There was no dispute over the goals but a number of decisions were questioned throughout the match, with tensions spilling over at the end of the game as a number of players clashed.

The Algerian FA have since filed a complaint with both CAF and FIFA while condemning the actions of the players.

"The Algerian Football Federation cannot ignore the refereeing decisions in the last match, which raised questions and left widespread outrage, which has been blamed for the credibility of the African referee, and it does not serve the image of African football internationally," read part of the statement.

"Accordingly, the Algerian Football Federation has formally contacted CAF and FIFA by submitting an official complaint, accompanied by a request to open an investigation, to clarify what occurred and take appropriate action in accordance with applicable regulations."

"Following the elimination of the national team in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025, the Algerian Football Federation would like to send this message to the supporters of the national team," added the statement.

"With the confirmation of the result of the match, the Algerian Football Federation calls on all Algerian supporters to embrace the spirit of solidarity and to surround the national team, which is going through a reconstruction phase, and continues the path of work and development.

"Important merit is approaching in less than five months, ahead of the World Cup final, which requires collective cohesion, calmness, and support from everyone."

Algeria won all their group matches, beating Sudan 3-0, Burkina Faso 1-0 and Equatorial Guinea 3-1.

They defeated DR Congo 1-0 to reach the last eight, where they lost to the Super Eagles.
