All Blacks in limbo as search for new coach officially underway

In an unprecedented move, the board fired Scott Roberson just two years into his four-year contract following an internal review earlier this month.

Robertson's departure has left a vacuum in the All Blacks camp, a void that needs to be filled just 20 months out from the 2027 Rugby World Cup and six months away from their next match.

On Monday, NZR confirmed that the search is underway and outlined a key requirement, "international experience",  that was missing from Robertson's coaching CV.

"New Zealand Rugby has today confirmed the process to appoint the All Blacks' Head Coach, including confirmation of a five-person appointment panel," read their statement.

"The panel will include Board Chair David Kirk, Board Member Keven Mealamu, experienced high performance expert Don Tricker, Interim CEO Steve Lancaster and a recently retired All Blacks player.

"NZR will invite New Zealand coaches with international head coaching experience to apply. The appointment panel will then shortlist and interview candidates. The final decision on the All Blacks' Head Coach will be made by the NZR Board."

Despite the apparent time crunch, NZR Interim CEO Steve Lancaster confirmed that the process will be thorough.

"The All Blacks Head Coach is an incredibly important appointment," he added.

"We've started the process and are giving it the care and urgency it deserves to set the team up for success. We'll provide further updates as soon as we can."

The All Blacks are set to play the first Test match of 2026 against France on 4 July in Christchurch.
