Cape Town City frustrated by gritty Orbit College in PSL playoff
Cape Town City started their fight for survival in the Betway Premiership with a disappointing goalless draw against Orbit College.
Former Orlando Pirates defender Kwanda Mngonyama, ex-Kaizer Chiefs veteran Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and long-serving full-back Mbongeni Gumede are the latest to part ways with the KwaZulu-Natal club.
According to Sportswire, midfielder Ethan Brooks may also be on his way out. A source close to the club revealed that his future remains uncertain, describing the situation as "50/50".
Meanwhile, midfielder Hendrick Ekstein - who began the past season in fine form - raised eyebrows with a cryptic message on social media on Friday. The 33-year-old posted, "I will forever be grateful," followed by a heart emoji, prompting speculation that he too is heading for the exit.
In another potential blow, playmaker Tshepang Moremi - one of Usuthu's standout performers last season - has reportedly attracted interest from Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, adding to growing concerns over squad stability.
Since the conclusion of the season, Usuthu have released nearly 10 players, despite finishing in the top eight.
Coach Arthur Zwane, who is set to remain at the helm, had repeatedly voiced his frustrations over the team's lack of cutting edge in front of goal and defensive lapses - issues that now appear to be at the heart of the club's reshuffle.
The latest trio of departures joins a list that includes Thembela Sikhakhane, Wayde Jooste, Veli Mothwa, Rowan Human, Abbubaker Mobara, and Boniface Haba.
In response, AmaZulu have begun reinforcing their squad. The club recently secured the services of Richards Bay defender Keagan Allan, while a move for Chippa United goalkeeper Darren Johnson is believed to be close to completion. Johnson, currently part of Bafana Bafana's COSAFA Cup squad in Bloemfontein, is set to play in the final against Angola at Toyota Stadium on Sunday.
Interestingly, Mngonyama - despite his AmaZulu exit - remains in the spotlight, having captained Bafana Bafana to a commanding 3-1 semi-final win over Comoros.
