Ange Postecoglou faces heat as Nottingham Forest fall to Midtjylland in Europa League

The visitors struck first when Ousmane Diao tapped into an empty net, silencing the home crowd. Forest quickly levelled through Dan Ndoye, but Danish defender Mads Bech restored Midtjylland's advantage.

Chris Wood thought he had pulled his side back into the contest, but two finishes were ruled out for offside. The hosts were then caught out on the counter-attack as Valdemar Andreasen slotted in a third to leave Forest with a mountain to climb.

Wood eventually converted a stoppage-time penalty to make it 3-2, but the final whistle was met with loud boos and chants of "sacked in the morning" aimed at Postecoglou.

Asked if he was surprised by the reaction, Postecoglou said: "The fans are disappointed. They are allowed to have their opinion and I heard their opinion. Nothing surprises me anymore in football. That's the climate we're in.

"My responsibility is to make sure we try and get some wins for this football club, and that's what I'll be focusing on."

The result meant Forest are still without a win under Postecoglou, who became the first permanent manager in 100 years to fail to win in his opening six matches, losing four of them.

Despite the pressure, the Australian insisted he still believed in his project. "Yes I do (believe things can turn) and nothing I saw tonight changes that. I really believe we're on the right track.

"Of course I would prefer people to be optimistic, but I can only change that by winning football matches."

For Midtjylland, it was a second successive group-stage victory which moved them into second place. Manager Mike Tullberg praised his players for their effort in what he described as a special evening. "We played an incredible team from England and the guys did very well," he said.

"The atmosphere was amazing, the crowd really gave the game something extra. It's a fantastic win for us."
