Arne Slot demands Liverpool 'cut out mistakes' in crucial Newcastle match

Arne Slot demands Liverpool 'cut out mistakes' in crucial Newcastle match

Liverpool head into Saturday's Anfield showdown in sixth place, two points behind the Champions League spots and just three ahead of Newcastle, making the contest vital for both sides.

"Every game is crucial because top four is what we want to achieve," Slot said. "We have experienced how tough it is against Newcastle. They are always difficult games for both teams, so it's one to look forward to."

The Reds come into the match full of confidence after a 6-0 Champions League victory over Qarabag secured qualification for the last 16. But Slot warned one big result is not enough.

"It helps to win, of course, but one win is not enough at this club," he said. "The closer you come to the end of the season, the less room there is for mistakes, and we have made too many, especially conceding late goals."

Liverpool will be without Jeremie Frimpong, who is out for several weeks, although Slot confirmed Ibrahima Konate and Curtis Jones have returned to the squad. Joe Gomez remains unavailable but is nearing a comeback.

Slot also welcomed Mohamed Salah's first goal since November, praising the team's improving attacking play. "If we put our attackers in good positions often enough, they will score," he said. "It was good for Mo and for the team."

The Dutch coach admitted Premier League matches demand more physical defending, especially at set-pieces, an area Liverpool must improve.

Slot also highlighted youngster Rio Nguhoma's growing influence, calling him a player trusted to change games late on.

With momentum building but pressure mounting, Slot knows another slip could damage Liverpool's hopes of securing Champions League football again next season.
