Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya scored the only goal of the match to hand Usuthu all three points, giving the club the perfect start as they look to build on last season’s fourth-place finish.
Zwane was pleased to begin the campaign with a win, saying the result was more important than the performance in the opening match.
"We really wanted to start well," said Zwane.
"Sometimes it is not about how you perform but getting maximum points and gaining momentum. It helps the players start believing in themselves because it is not easy."
The AmaZulu coach believes victories are vital in building confidence and creating a strong team spirit.
"To build confidence, belief and chemistry in the squad, you need to win games. Sometimes you will win ugly," he said.
Zwane felt his side deserved a bigger winning margin after creating several chances.
"We had chances, and I don’t think the 1-0 scoreline was a true reflection. It could have been more."
Despite admitting his team was not at its best, Zwane expects the performances to improve as the season continues.
"I think if we can improve, we can be a solid team. It was the first game of the season, so we were always going to be a bit sloppy. But I would have been disappointed if we didn’t get the points, and the players deserve credit."
Zwane also believes AmaZulu are beginning to show the identity and playing style he wants from the team.
"Our structure is getting better," he said.
"Whether you know what we are going to do or not, we will do it and we will still penetrate you. That's our strength."
He added that developing a successful team takes patience and commitment to a clear plan.
"When you are building a system and identity, there will be ups and downs, but we still have to believe. It is like building a house – you have a plan, and no matter what happens, you stick to that plan."
"As the campaign progresses, we will see whether we are progressing or regressing. When we keep winning, the players gain confidence, and that is very important."
