Atletico Madrid among clubs interested in Southampton star Mateus Fernandes

The 21-year-old Portuguese youth international, who impressed throughout last season, has continued to build momentum during the off-season.

Fernandes recently featured in Saints' pre-season friendlies in Girona, where his performances caught the eye of scouts and club officials.

La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are reportedly among a "long list" of suitors keeping tabs on the dynamic midfielder. Premier League outfit West Ham United have also expressed interest, although their enquiry was met with no encouragement from the south coast club.

Southampton manager Will Still is determined to keep hold of Fernandes, who has quickly established himself as a key part of his plans.

Still has made it clear that the player will only depart if the "right price" is met, underlining the club's firm stance in negotiations.

Despite the mounting speculation, Fernandes remains contracted to the Saints and is preparing for the upcoming season under Still's guidance. However, with the transfer window still open, the situation could yet develop should a significant offer arrive.

"I know there's interest. I know there's a lot of noise around him. That's normal when you've got quality players like him, but I think the club has been clear," said Saints boss Will Still.

"If he leaves, he'll leave at the right price, and we'll be able to replace him. I'm not too worried about that. I don't want to get involved in all the rumours and stuff.

"We know that as long as he's here, we can use him and he'll be good. And if he goes, then I'm sure everyone will come out bigger and better from it."
