Barcelona sweating as midfielder Frenkie de Jong ruled out for six weeks

The 28-year-old suffered the problem in his right hamstring during a training session. After medical tests, the club announced he is expected to be out for between five and six weeks, a spell that could shape Barcelona's season in both domestic and European competitions.

De Jong will miss the Champions League last-16 tie against either Paris Saint-Germain or Newcastle United, a crucial stage in Barcelona's European campaign. His absence also stretches across several key La Liga fixtures, including matches against Villarreal CF, Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla FC and Rayo Vallecano.

Barcelona currently sit top of La Liga, holding a narrow one-point lead over rivals Real Madrid. With such a slim margin at the summit, losing one of their most influential midfielders at this stage of the campaign is a serious concern.

The Dutch international will also be unavailable for next Tuesday's Spanish Cup semi-final second leg against Atlético Madrid. Barcelona face a daunting task in that tie, trailing 4-0 from the first leg.

De Jong's injury extends beyond club football. He will miss the March international window, including the Netherlands' pre-World Cup friendlies against Norway national football team and Ecuador national football team.

For Barcelona, the timing could hardly be worse. De Jong's composure, tactical intelligence and ability to control tempo have been central to their title push. Now, with decisive weeks ahead, the squad must respond without one of their key leaders in midfield.

In the 2025/2026 season, De Jong has made 31 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona, recording 1 goal and 7 assists. He recently scored his first goal of the campaign on 22 February in a 3–0 victory over Levante.
