Bayern Munich mount remarkable second-half fightback to beat Mainz

Seeking to give his first team a bit of a rest, Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany made nine changes to the side that beat Bayer Leverkusen during the week.

However, the lack of continuity meant the Bavarians did not start the clash against Mainz well and found themselves on the back foot from the opening whistle.

Dominik Kohr put the home side ahead with a crisp volley in the 15th minute after latching onto a Kaishu Sano cross.

Paul Nebel doubled their advantage 14 minutes later after pouncing on a rebound from a Jonas Urbig save.

Mainz moved into a seemingly unassailable position on the stroke of half-time when Sheraldo Becker tapped in from close range after Nadiem Amiri's strike was saved onto the crossbar.

However, Kompany had other plans and introduced Harry Kane and Michael Olise off the bench for the second half.

The Bavarians were much improved after the break and Nicolas Jackson pulled on back seven minutes after the restart, finishing from a Konrad Laimer cross.

Olise cut the deficit even further in the 73rd minute with a thunderbolt into the top corner after cutting inside off his wing.

Jamal Musiala then got Bayern Munich back onto level terms in the 80th minute, bundling the ball over the line after a goalmouth scramble.

The stunning comeback was complete in the 83rd minute when Harry Kane struck home from close range.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg and Borussia Monchengladbach drew 0-0 at Volkswagen Arena, while Anton Kade (44') and Ritsu Doan (66') traded goals in Augsburg and Frankfurt's 1-1 stalemate at the WWK ARENA.

Goals from Budu Zivzivadze (3') and Eren Dinkci (82') secured a 2-0 win for Heidenheim over St Pauli at Voith Arena, and a Patrik Schick brace was enough to hand Bayer Leverkusen a 2-1 win over Koln at RheinEngergieStadion. Luca Waldschmidt got the consolation goal for the hosts.

RB Leipzig dominated Union Berlin in a 3-1 win at the Red Bull Arena. Max Finkgrafe opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Romulo doubled their advantage three minutes later.

Ridle Baku put them 3-0 up in the 63rd minute before Danilho Doekhi pulled one back with 12 minutes left on the clock.

Hoffenheim strengthened their chances of making the Champions League next season with a 2-1 win over HSV at Volksparkstadion.

Fisnik Asllani's 18th-minute opener was cancelled out by a Robert Glatzel penalty in the 34th minute and Tim Lemperle scored what turned out to be the winner on the stroke of half-time.
