Brave Orlando Pirates fall short in CAF Champions League penalty heartbreak

The Buccaneers produced a thrilling comeback to level the tie 3-3 on aggregate, winning 3-0 in regulation time before losing 5-4 in the shootout. Both teams finished the match with 10 men in a dramatic contest that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg in Lubumbashi, Pirates knew they needed a fast start, and they delivered. After several missed chances, including efforts from Patrick Maswanganyi, Oswin Appollis, and Kamohelo Sebelele, the breakthrough came in the 39th minute when Masindi Nematenjela fired home from outside the box.

However, tempers flared moments later as Tshepang Moremi and Lupopo's Chris Sumbu Maniania were both sent off following a heated exchange.

The hosts kept their momentum after the break, with substitute Yanela Mbuthuma doubling the lead just four minutes into the second half to make it 3-2 on aggregate.

As Pirates pushed relentlessly for the decisive goal, Appollis struck in stoppage time to complete the comeback and force penalties as the game ended 3-3.

But the dream ended cruelly from the spot. Deon Hotto missed his penalty, and Mbuthuma's effort in sudden death proved decisive as Lupopo triumphed 5-4 to advance to the group stages.
