Bubista lands RS Berkane coaching role after Cape Verde World Cup success

The Moroccan clubs confirmed the appointment on Tuesday via social media, although no details of the coach's contract were released.

The move follows lengthy discussions over whether Bubista could continue leading Cape Verde while also taking charge of Renaissance Berkane. However, reports suggest the 56-year-old is now expected to step down from his national team role in the coming days.

Bubista, whose full name is Pedro Leitao Brito, guided Cape Verde to a historic first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance after securing qualification, a feat that earned him the African Coach of the Year award in 2025.

Cape Verde impressed during the tournament in Canada, Mexico and the United States, earning surprise draws against Spain and Uruguay in the group stage before their memorable run ended with an extra-time defeat to Argentina in the Round of 32.

Renaissance Berkane will hope Bubista can build on that success at club level. The Moroccan side won the domestic league title in 2025 before finishing runners-up last season, while also reaching the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
