Borussia Dortmund narrowly avoided a major upset at Signal Iduna Park, overcoming a resilient Heidenheim side in a five-goal thriller.

Waldemar Anton broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, but the visitors stunned the "Yellow Wall" with a quickfire double from Julian Niehues on either side of halftime to take a 2-1 lead. Facing a third straight home game without a win, BVB turned to Serhou Guirassy.

The striker levelled from the penalty spot in the 68th minute before bundling home the winner just two minutes later.

Though Guirassy missed a second penalty late on, Dortmund held through eight minutes of stoppage time to close the gap on league leaders Bayern Munich to six points.

Stuttgart 1-0 Freiburg

In a tightly contested Baden-Wurttemberg derby, Stuttgart secured a vital victory thanks to a moment of pure magic from Ermedin Demirovic.

Despite both teams showing signs of fatigue from mid-week European duties, the hosts dominated possession and pinned Freiburg deep for much of the match.

Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu was in inspired form, producing several world-class saves to keep the scoreline level as the clock ticked toward 90 minutes.

However, the deadlock was finally broken in the 89th minute when Demirovic unleashed a sensational looping effort into the top corner.

The win propels Sebastian Hoeness's side back into the Champions League qualification spots, rewarding their persistence in a match that felt destined for a draw.
