Joao Pedro had given the Blues the lead in the 37th minute, rewarding their dominance for much of the first half. Yet, despite controlling possession and creating numerous opportunities, Chelsea were unable to extend their advantage. The tide turned after Ollie Watkins equalized just past the hour mark, and the England international later sealed Villa's victory with a second goal, handing the visitors their 11th consecutive win across all competitions.
Maresca, observing the unfolding collapse, admitted that the team's struggles after conceding were a familiar problem. "For one hour we dominated the game, we were very good. Unfortunately, after that, the dynamic changed. By the time they made it 1-1, we should've scored three or four," he said. "The goal we conceded was the turning point. Until then, we were in complete control, but it isn't the first time this has happened. We need to analyze why we struggle to manage the game after conceding."
The Italian coach also addressed Chelsea's substitution decisions. Cole Palmer, brought off in the 72nd minute for Estevao Willian, was visibly frustrated as he left the pitch, but Maresca downplayed the incident: "No, he was working very well. On the ball and off the ball, pressing - he was very good. We have another game in 48 hours, so he was good, and we are happy he's back."
Marc Cucurella was also substituted in the second half due to a hamstring issue, replaced by Malo Gusto. "He was complaining about a feeling in his hamstring. We don't know if it's an injury or not, so he asked for the change," Maresca explained.
Chelsea now face a challenging period, with Maresca tasked with addressing the team's inability to close out matches and turning promising performances into points. The Stamford Bridge faithful will hope their side can convert dominance into results in the coming weeks.
