Chelsea thump Esperence de Tunis to reach last-16 of FIFA Club World Cup

It was sweltering conditions at  Lincoln Financial Field, marking Philadelphia's hottest day since 1994. This, combined with the absence of Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto, saw Chelsea struggle to get going against a resilient Esperance defence.

A cautious first half with produced few chances for either side. Liam Delap's shot on target after 15 minutes was easily saved by Esperance gloveman Bechir Ben Said. The stopper later denied Josh Acheampong's low drive as well.

But the opening stanza finished with a flourish.

The breakthrough came in stoppage time when Tosin Adarabioyo headed in Enzo Fernandez's set-piece. Moments later, Delap's strength and skill doubled Chelsea's lead, outmuscling defenders to score his first goal for the club.

The second half saw Chelsea in control, though they missed chances to extend their lead. Fernandez, Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke all failed to convert opportunities.

With the match already gone and deep into extra time, Tyrique George put an exclamation point on the win with a long-range strike that slipped through Ben Said's hands in the 97th minute.

Chelsea now face Benfica in the knockout stage, while the African club exit the tournament, having lost six of their nine CWC matches.
