Cole Palmer enjoyed "proud moment" being Chelsea captain in FA Cup mauling

With Reece James sidelined by injury and Enzo Fernandez unavailable, Palmer was handed the armband by manager Liam Rosenior. The England international responded with a composed performance as Chelsea secured a place at Wembley.

"It was a proud moment being captain," Palmer said. "I enjoyed it and it was a good afternoon. We needed to win. It was a difficult four games, but to get to a semi-final at Wembley was very important."

Chelsea settled the tie early. Goals from Jorrel Hato and Joao Pedro put the hosts in control, before Palmer forced an own goal before half-time.

After the break, Tosin Adarabioyo, Andrey Santos and Estevao added to the scoreline. Alejandro Garnacho completed the rout with a late penalty.

Rosenior said giving Palmer the captaincy was a natural decision. "It's a natural step for Cole. He shows leadership," he said. "He's brave and always wants the ball. That reflects what I want in my team."

The manager also confirmed a fresh injury concern for Jamie Gittens, who may have suffered another hamstring setback in training.

"Unfortunately, Jamie picked up what looks like a hamstring injury again," Rosenior said. "We have to scan him and make sure. It's a real shame for him. I think it's the third time it's happened.

"We need to help him and make sure he's OK. I can't give a timeframe at the moment."

Chelsea's next match is against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday, 12 April.
