Danny Welbeck extends Brighton stay until 2027

The 35-year-old's previous deal had been due to expire at the end of the campaign, but the additional 12-month clause - included in the two-year contract he signed in 2024 - has now been activated, ending uncertainty over his future on the South Coast.

Welbeck's extension comes amid another productive season. He has scored 11 goals in 30 appearances in all competitions, including 10 in the Premier League, making him Brighton's top scorer.

His latest strike sealed Sunday's 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest, ensuring he reached double figures in the league for the second straight season - a feat previously managed at Brighton only by Glenn Murray.

Since joining as a free agent in October 2020 after leaving Watford, Welbeck has scored 48 goals in 191 appearances, underlining his value to the club.

Welbeck is set to face former club Arsenal on Wednesday, with the league leaders visiting the Amex. The striker also began his career at Manchester United, adding further intrigue to the occasion.

Brighton have bounced back from a six-match winless run with consecutive victories under head coach Fabian Hurzeler, keeping their top-half ambitions intact.

Welbeck's form has also sparked talk of a possible England recall, with national team manager Thomas Tuchel previously admitting he had considered the veteran forward for selection ahead of the World Cup.
