Upbeat Gavin Hunt sets 30-point target for improved Stellenbosch this season

Upbeat Gavin Hunt sets 30-point target for improved Stellenbosch this season

The former SuperSport United and Kaizer Chiefs coach joined Stellies with the club struggling at the wrong end of the standings in second from bottom at the half-way stage.

In his short time with the team, Hunt has transformed their fortunes, and they head into their midweek game with 11th placed Siwelele unbeaten in their last four games and on the back of two wins, over Amakhosi and AmaZulu.

Stellies now find themselves in ninth place with 22 points from 18 games - just two adrift of TS Galaxy in eighth, who have played a game more.

Siwelele will be no pushovers though having gone unbeaten in their last five games, while last overcoming Galaxy 1-0 in their last league game.

Reflecting on their recent win, where Ibrahim Jabaar scored the only goal, Hunt admits he was impressed his side performance.

He has also challenged his team to go on and secure their status as soon as possible.

He said in the Citizen: "We have played so many games in the last couple of weeks," said Hunt after the match.

"I was expecting a downturn after Tuesday, but I thought we were good in the first half. We started brightly. We said they (AmaZulu) would have more impetus in the second half but we still had good opportunities to kill the game off and didn't.

“It was a bit frustrating and the last five minutes was a bit helter-skelter. But it was good to win and get out of the relegation fight. Now we have to keep going and get to 30 points as quickly as we can.”
