Dayot Upamecano talks intensify as Bayern Munich aim to extend contract

The likes of Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, and Manchester United have all been linked with possibly signing the defender.

The Bundesliga leaders have successfully secured long-term extensions for key players in recent months, including Jamal Musiala, Joshua Kimmich, and Alphonso Davies. Leroy Sane departed on a free transfer in the summer of 2025 to join Galatasaray.

Attention has now shifted to Upamecano, whose current deal runs until the end of the 2025/26 season, meaning he can begin talks with foreign clubs over a pre-contract from January 2026 if no agreement is reached.

The 27-year-old has been in outstanding form under Vincent Kompany, establishing himself as one of the league's top defenders and a leader at the back during Bayern's dominant start to the season. His improved consistency, ball-playing ability, and partnership with the likes of Jonathan Tah and Kim Min-jae have been pivotal.

Rival clubs are monitoring the situation closely, with PSG viewing him as a priority if no renewal materialises, while Real Madrid see him as a potential addition to bolster their defence. Premier League sides have also shown interest in a possible free transfer.

Bayern are reportedly preparing a significant offer, potentially a five-year deal until 2031 worth around 20 million euros annually, plus bonuses, to make him one of the club's top earners, behind only Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala. However, differences remain over the exact salary structure and a substantial signing bonus demanded by Upamecano's representatives.

Speaking recently, Hainer struck a positive tone: "Everything I'm hearing, including when I speak to him myself, is that he is extremely happy at Bayern Munich. He feels very comfortable in the team, and he feels incredibly comfortable with the coach. This is also reflected in his performances. I'm optimistic."

Upamecano has remained professional and non-committal in public but has previously indicated he feels settled in Munich. Kompany's influence is seen as crucial in convincing him to stay long-term.

Time is of the essence: with the January window approaching, Bayern are determined to avoid losing another star defender on a free and are pushing to finalise terms soon.

Elsewhere on the contract front, Serge Gnabry, rediscovering his best form this season, is open to extending and even willing to accept reduced terms. Formal talks are expected to begin in the coming months. Leon Goretzka, also entering the final year of his deal, wants to remain, but the club is still evaluating whether he fits into future plans before committing.
