Bayer Leverkusen's Nathan Tella targets AFCON 2025 spot for Nigeria
Bayer Leverkusen winger Nathan Tella has opened up about his ambitions to be part of the Nigeria squad for the AFCON 2025 tournament.
The 47-year-old tactician's position has been under scrutiny following Nigeria's shock exit from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) at the group stage.
With World Cup qualifiers looming against Rwanda on September 6 in Uyo and South Africa on September 9 in Bloemfontein, Chelle has publicly discussed his situation.
"I have heard a lot of stories about them wanting to sack me and replace me with someone else. I have heard about that," Chelle told Osasu Obayiuwana, according to African Football.
"I know, quite well, that I can be fired after one match. This is the life in football. But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay up the remainder of my contract."
Chelle, who previously managed Algeria's MC Oran, emphasized that his move to Nigeria was driven by ambition rather than money.
"When I came to Nigeria, I didn't come here because of money. I was earning more in my last job. I came to Nigeria because this is a very big team and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came here for the challenge. Nothing has changed about that," he added.
He also revealed limited contact with NFF leadership during his tenure.
"I have not had very much contact with the NFF President and the General Secretary, since I took charge of the team.
"We met at the very beginning, of course, and a few times afterwards. But I have been alone, largely, as I go on with doing my job."
Reports indicate Chelle earns 50,000 USD (roughly R880,000) per month as Nigeria's head coach, highlighting the high stakes of his role with Africa's footballing giants.
