Erling Haaland header seals Man City win as Tottenham draw another blank

City moved to the top of the table with nine points from three games, but Tottenham remain without a win or a goal after their opening three matches.

Manchester City maintained their strong record against newly promoted sides with a narrow 1-0 victory over Coventry City, leaving Frank Lampard's team still searching for their first point and goal of the season.

Coventry showed early promise and could have taken a surprise lead after mistakes from City. Gianluigi Donnarumma almost gifted the visitors an opener when the ball slipped under his foot, while another loose pass gave Taiwo Awoniyi a clear opportunity. However, the Coventry striker's effort went narrowly wide.

City eventually found the breakthrough in the 26th minute.

Antoine Semenyo showed excellent determination to keep the ball in play near the byline before sending over a difficult cross. Haaland attacked it and headed home to continue his impressive record against promoted teams.

The goal did not end Coventry's resistance. The Sky Blues continued to defend strongly and produced blocks to prevent Enzo Fernandez and Haaland from extending City's lead.

Haaland thought he had scored again shortly before the hour mark after Fernandez kept the ball alive inside the area, but the goal was ruled out because the Argentine had been offside in the build-up.

Coventry continued to threaten despite City's pressure. Loum Tchaouna came close with a powerful effort from the edge of the box, forcing Donnarumma into an important save.

The City goalkeeper was called upon again with 10 minutes remaining when he denied Ellis Simms from close range, taking the shot directly in the face to keep his side ahead.

City survived a tense finish to secure a third straight league victory and move to nine points from three matches.

Coventry, meanwhile, remain bottom of the Premier League with no points and no goals from their opening three games.

Tottenham's goal drought continues at Forest

Tottenham Hotspur's difficult start to the Premier League season continued as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham have now failed to score in each of their first three league matches and have only one point from a possible nine.

The visitors controlled much of the first half but struggled to create clear chances. Omar Marmoush came closest for Spurs after using his strength to create room for a shot, but his effort went wide.

Forest gradually grew into the game and created opportunities of their own. Jair Cunha fired over before Liam Delap, making his first start for the club, set up Morgan Gibbs-White, whose effort was saved by Antonín Kinsky.

Forest appeared to have broken the deadlock shortly after the hour mark when Gibbs-White got behind the Tottenham defence and tried to lift the ball over Kinsky.

The goalkeeper managed to get a hand to the attempt and slow it down, but Neco Williams followed up to put the ball into the net.

However, the celebrations were cut short after a VAR review ruled that Williams had handled the ball.

Tottenham then had a chance to punish Forest on the counter when Kinsky launched a long pass forward to Marmoush. The forward found himself with options, including the unmarked Mohammed Kudus, but chose to shoot and sent the ball well over the crossbar.

It summed up a frustrating afternoon for both teams in front of goal.

Tottenham avoided a third consecutive league defeat to start the season, something they had not suffered since 1979, but they remain without a win or goal.

Forest are also still waiting for their first league victory under Oliver Glasner and have now gone six Premier League matches without a win.

Tottenham sit 17th with one point, while Forest are 16th with two points.
