Ex-Mamelodi Sundowns' coach Rulani Mokwena defends shock switch, points to bigger mission

The 39-year-old coach raised eyebrows across the continent after leaving the Algerian outfit while they sit top of the league standings and remain favourites to secure another title.

Reports suggesting he would earn close to R1.4 million per month in Libya quickly surfaced, fuelling speculation about his motives.

However, Mokwena has firmly dismissed those claims. Speaking to Robert Marawa, he insisted that financial gain was never the priority.

"Well, I'm already being paid a salary at Mouloudia. If anybody knows me, I worked at Wydad for eight or nine months without a salary. I'm not moved by money, believe me," he said on 947 Radio.

"I see the numbers being mentioned and I just laugh. Sometimes I wish that's what they were offering, but it's far from it."

Beyond the financial talk, Mokwena emphasised that his move is rooted in a broader sporting vision. He believes the project at Al Ittihad offers a rare opportunity to stretch himself and contribute to rebuilding a club with significant history.

"There's a lot more from a sporting perspective," he explained. "It's about testing myself, challenging myself, and working with people who have made sacrifices for me. It's also about helping them grow."

The timing of his departure has drawn criticism, particularly with MC Alger on the brink of success. Mokwena acknowledged the concerns but offered a candid reflection on loyalty in football.

"I know what being loyal to a football club has gotten me. Sometimes you have to make decisions differently because history teaches you," he added.

In choosing Libya, Mokwena is embracing risk over comfort - a move he believes will ultimately shape both his career and the future of his new club.
