Williams predicts bright Bafana Bafana future after reaching FIFA World Cup knockouts

Williams predicts bright Bafana Bafana future after reaching FIFA World Cup knockouts

The South African goalkeeper led his country past the group stages of the global tournament for the first time in their history against all odds after suffering defeat in the first match against Mexico.

Williams reserved special praise for the young players contribution to the progression to the next round, earmarking them to play a pivotal role in the future of Mzansi football.

"I'm super proud, I'm ecstatic, just for what this team has been through," said Williamd to SABC Sport.

"The doubt, the doubters, the stress that we've gone through to play at this elite level is not easy. To keep a clean sheet against such quality opposition, to perform the way we did, defend the way we did, speaks volumes of the character of this team.

"I'm scared for the future of this country. These boys are 20, 19, 21 years old playing at this level. I'm old already, so the experience that they are gaining will only help us as a country, but amazing. I'm just happy, so happy, proud to be a leader of this team."

The 34-year-old is set to lead his side in their Round of 32 showdown against co-hosts Canada at the Los Angeles Stadium on Sunday.
