Senegal seeks pardon for 18 fans jailed after AFCON final
Senegal's government has spoken out strongly against the sentencing of 18 of its football supporters in Morocco following the Africa Cup of Nations final in January.

Benatia confirmed his resignation on Sunday through a statement shared on his social media platforms, explaining that his decision was driven by a desire to protect the club's long-term stability.
"Since arriving at the club, I have always acted with my heart and had only one goal - to bring Marseille back to the level it deserves," Benatia wrote, as quoted by
"I know this club, I know what it requires, and I know the passion that defines it."
The former defender stressed that his departure was not impulsive, but the result of careful consideration amid internal challenges.
"You know my honesty and transparency. Given the tensions around the management, I have submitted my resignation - not just a suggestion, but a real decision," he continued.
"The club will always be bigger than any individual, and I do not want my presence to become an obstacle or a burden for its organization and development."
Benatia revealed that the decision was finalised earlier this month following extended reflection.
"For this reason, and after long reflection, I took responsibility and decided, on Monday, February 9, to end my collaboration with Marseille," he added.
"I leave with the feeling that I gave everything professionally. Still, unfortunately, I could not calm the environment around the team, which I believe has great potential to achieve its goals."
He concluded his message with a call for unity, urging supporters to continue backing the team.
"Stay behind them and encourage them as you always have."
Benatia's return to Marseille in late 2023 was widely viewed as both symbolic and strategic. A product of the club's youth system, he rejoined the Ligue 1 side in November 2023 as a sporting adviser, working closely with club president Pablo Longoria.
His influence grew steadily, and by January 2025 he was promoted to Director of Football, assuming responsibility for recruitment and the club's broader sporting project. However, persistent internal tensions ultimately brought his tenure to an early end.
