FIFA World Cup: Javier Aguirre hails Mexico's 'fighting spirit' after topping Group A

The result booked Mexico's place in the knockout stage and continued their push to reach new heights at the tournament. Aguirre admitted his side struggled during the opening stages of the match but was pleased with how they responded.

"I didn't like the first 20 minutes, but then we settled down, the team recovered, and that's where we showed the power of mental strength," Aguirre said after the match.

The experienced coach, who previously guided Mexico at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, believes the team's mentality has improved and could be a key factor as they aim to go further than ever before.

"Obviously, we always have a few things to work on, but I think we've improved in that area, that mentality of 'Well, that's it, we've done our part.' This group has character," he added.

Mexico raised their performance level after a slow start against Czechia, controlling the game and finishing strongly to secure another important World Cup victory. The result confirmed them as Group A winners and gave Aguirre's squad confidence heading into the knockout rounds.

The 67-year-old coach knows Mexico still face a difficult challenge if they are to break their long-standing quarter-final barrier, but he believes the squad's determination gives them a strong foundation.

Mexico will now prepare to face a third-placed team from Group C, E, F, H or I in the next round as they continue their World Cup journey.
