Football mourns former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Michael Nkambule

Nkambule, who hailed from Etwatwa in Daveyton, died on Friday after spending nearly two weeks in hospital following the accident.

His football journey began with local amateur side Brazil before he earned a place in the Kaizer Chiefs development structures. His talent later took him abroad, with the midfielder joining French club Strasbourg.

Although Nkambule did not make a first-team appearance for the French side, the move represented a significant milestone in his career. He eventually returned to South Africa, where he continued his professional career with clubs including SuperSport United and Black Leopards.

Family friend and spokesperson Siyabonga Moloi confirmed that Nkambule had been fighting for his life after suffering serious injuries in the accident.

"Michael was involved in a car accident about two weeks ago. The vehicle he was driving overturned and he was alone at the time," Moloi told Soccer Laduma.

Nkambule was initially taken to Far East Rand Hospital before being transferred to Johannesburg Gen Hospital, where he underwent surgery for spinal cord injuries. Although the operation was successful, he was later transferred back to Far East Rand Hospital, where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Away from professional football, Nkambule remained actively involved in the sport. He regularly featured for Ditlhake Masters, a legends team made up of former professional footballers, including several ex-Bafana Bafana players.

One of his final football appearances came for Mohlakeng-based D12 Manyora Masters, helping them win the Mandela Day BetXchange Super Cup.

Nkambule also remained committed to developing young talent in Etwatwa. He co-owned a football club with Moloi, with the pair sharing a passion for nurturing aspiring players.

His death has left a void among his family, friends and the football community, with tributes expected to continue as arrangements for his funeral are finalised.
