Aubrey Modiba highlights Mamelodi Sundowns' MTN8 advantage over Polokwane City

Sundowns were forced to postpone their opening Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants, meaning they will enter the new campaign through the MTN8 rather than alongside the rest of the league.

Although Modiba admitted the squad would have preferred to begin their title defence as originally planned, he believes the situation has provided Sundowns with an opportunity to gather valuable information about their next opponents.

Rise and Shine have already played their opening league match under new coach Willy Moloto, beating Richards Bay 2-1 last weekend.

That result has given Sundowns competitive footage of a City team that has undergone changes during the off-season, including the arrival of new players and a new technical team.

"Going into the MTN8, they've already played. So, I think it also gives us something to watch how they play this season because they've got a new coach," said the defender earlier this week.

"They've brought in new players as well. So, yeah, that game will help us to analyse them, know their strengths and weaknesses going into that game."

While City have shown some of their hand, Sundowns have yet to play a competitive fixture this season.

Modiba believes that could create an element of uncertainty for their opponents, who have less information about how the reigning league champions will approach the new campaign.

"It's an advantage for us because they don't know a lot about us this season, but they know us as players, and hopefully that can play to our advantage," he added.

Despite the disappointment of seeing other teams begin their league campaigns, Modiba says Sundowns accepted the circumstances and have shifted their attention towards making their MTN8 opener count.

The Brazilians will now look to turn their extra preparation and knowledge of City into a winning start to their trophy hunt.
