The game was played in sweltering heat and was often niggly, with Paraguay employing compact defensive tactics and frequent fouls, which were effective in disrupting France's rhythm.
While the French were still able to create chances, many of them were from long range and off target, meaning Orlando Gill needed to make just four saves from 15 shots on goal.
France never stopped pushing, though, and were rewarded around the 70 minute mark when Substitute Désiré Doué drove into the box and was fouled by Diego Gomez.
After a VAR review, the penalty was awarded and star man Kylian Mbappe calmly converted, sending goalkeeper Gill the wrong way despite several Paraguay players trying to delay the kick and disturb his rhythm.
Mbappe's goal was his seventh of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, putting him level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.
He should have added a second to kill the game off late on but was denied by an excellent save by Gill.
Overall, France controlled territory and possession but struggled for penetration against Paraguay's five-man defensive block. The breakthrough took a bit of individual quality from Doue's direct run to break Paraguay's resolve.
Speaking after the game, Mbappe revealed that France was always expecting a tough game against Paraguay, saying they are prepared to do whatever is necessary to advance in the competition.
“We knew what kind of match we were going to have,” he said. "If we have to get our hands dirty, we’ll get our hands dirty.
“They thought we were going to come and play in a tuxedo, just to produce nice moves and one-twos. But we know how to play dirty football too.”
