France boss Didier Deschamps backs Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike

The 23-year-old, who first broke into Didier Deschamps' squad with a call-up in September, has now been involved in all three selections since, underlining the growing trust placed in him by the national team setup.

Ekitike was rewarded with a place in the starting XI after scoring his first goal for France earlier in the week against Ukraine, a moment that marked a significant milestone in his burgeoning international career.

Although he did not add to that tally in Baku, his performance drew praise from Deschamps, who highlighted the forward's increasing confidence and his ability to link play in the final third.

The match also brought a familiar connection for Ekitike, as France were captained by his Liverpool teammate Ibrahima Konate. The pair have become influential figures at Anfield, with Ekitike quickly endearing himself to supporters.

Liverpool fans recently voted him their signing of the summer, impressed by the technical ability he has shown since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt.

"Hugo Ekitike is also gaining confidence," Deschamps said via Foot Mercato.

"He's a young player, with a lot of dynamism. He has the ability to break through with his speed. These are attacking elements that are adding to the squad."
