Gaston Sirino backs Lucas Ribeiro for top award

Ribeiro has 16 goals and 11 assists in 43 appearances in all competitions for the Brazilians this season.

Sirino spent a number of years plying his trade alongside Ribeiro at Sundowns ahead of his switch to Kaizer Chiefs this season.

Speaking ahead of the Nedbank Cup final, where Amakhosi face rivals Orlando Pirates in Durban this weekend, Sirino says he expects his friend to win the prestigious award - after losing out to Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams in the race for last season's award.

Sirino said in the Citizen: "Lucas Ribeiro is a top player and my friend.

“I think he has the quality to be player of the season, the numbers are there, he plays very well in every game. For me he is the best player in South Africa right now."

Sundowns are closing in on an eighth consecutive Premiership title and Ribeiro could add to his tally against Chippa United on Tuesday night.
