Gavin Hunt: Lack of continental fixtures gives Orlando Pirates title chance

Hunt, who last lifted the league trophy with Bidvest Wits in the 2016/17 season, made his remarks following Durban City's defeat to Pirates over the weekend in Durban.

According to Hunt, Pirates' depth and schedule give them a clear competitive edge this season. The Buccaneers' absence from continental competitions allows for full training weeks and proper recovery periods, factors Hunt believes are crucial to their improved performances and consistency.

Hunt also highlighted the draining nature of CAF competitions, including travel, intensity, and unpredictability, which has historically affected Sundowns.

Competing on multiple fronts stretches their squad and can disrupt preparation for domestic league matches. In contrast, Pirates can focus entirely on league fixtures, giving them a tangible advantage over rivals still engaged in continental tournaments.

"When you look at this Pirates squad, over the last three years, I think they have huge impact players, which makes the difference," said Hunt.

"You combine that with them being out of Africa (CAF Champions League).

"Africa, my friends, you've got no idea unless you've been there. So, not to play in Africa, I think it's a big plus for them."

With the league race heating up, Hunt's analysis suggests that this season could break the pattern of Sundowns' dominance.
