The former Real Madrid, Portugal and Bafana Bafana coach replaces Otto Addo at the helm following the latter's sacking on March 30 after losing four consecutive friendlies leading up to the global showpiece in June.
According to reports, Queiroz joins the Black Stars on a short-term deal that will be reviewed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after the World Cup.
"The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, working with all key stakeholders, has appointed Carlos Queiroz as head coach of the senior national team," said the statement from the GFA.
The 73-year-old recently parted ways with Oman last month after failure to secure qualification to the 2026 World Cup.
Ghana qualified for the tournament after topping their group and have been drawn alongside Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.
The Ghanaians will be hoping the Portuguese mentor can help emulate or eclipse their 2010 World Cup achievement of reaching the quarterfinals of the competition.
