Ghana football mourns after deadly robbery incident

The 20-year-old Berekum Chelsea winger died after the club’s team bus was ambushed by armed robbers while returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture on Sunday.

According to reports, the attack occurred along the Goaso–Bibiani road as the team travelled back from their match against Samartex in Samreboi. The club described a terrifying scene in which gunmen blocked the road before opening fire on the vehicle.

"Masked men wielding guns started shooting at our bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for safety," the club said in a statement.

Amid the chaos, Frimpong sustained fatal injuries, with the Ghana Football Association later confirming his death.

The GFA expressed "profound shock and deep sorrow," describing the young winger as a promising talent whose commitment and passion reflected the spirit of the domestic game.

His death has not only left Berekum Chelsea devastated but has also sent shockwaves throughout Ghanaian football, reigniting concerns about the safety of teams travelling for league matches.

In response, the GFA has pledged to review and strengthen security arrangements for clubs on domestic duty — a move many will view as long overdue.

The incident also echoes a previous attack in 2023 involving Legon Cities FC, whose team bus was targeted under similar circumstances, though no casualties were reported at the time.
