Gor Mahia launch probe after heavy Pyramids defeat

Gor Mahia launch probe after heavy Pyramids defeat

The Kenyan champions were eliminated from the competition after suffering a 5-1 defeat to the Egyptian side in Cairo on Sunday, completing a 7-1 aggregate loss in the first preliminary round.

Gor Mahia had entered the second leg with a two-goal deficit after losing 2-0 at home, but few would have expected them to struggle as badly as they did in Egypt.

Unlike the first leg, where they managed to frustrate Pyramids for long periods, Gor Mahia's defence was repeatedly exposed in Cairo as the hosts found considerable space in dangerous areas.

Omondi was also unable to produce the same level of performance expected of him, with the goalkeeper making costly errors as Pyramids ran riot.

According to Pulse Sports Kenya, the result has prompted the Gor Mahia hierarchy to investigate the circumstances surrounding the performance, with Rachier admitting that the outcome came as a major shock.

"It is difficult to say anything positive about what happened in Cairo. We are still trying to grapple with the results because we got shocked," said Rachier.

"If anything, we got humiliated and the issue is, why? That is what we want to look into. It remains something we will need to look into. When we were going, we thought we were already very prepared but alas! We were not quite prepared yet."

The aftermath of the defeat has reportedly created further uncertainty within the squad.

Pulse Sports Kenya reports that some players have been suspended following the disappointing display, with those who remain available allegedly threatening to boycott training.
