Granit Xhaka: Xabi Alonso's authenticity earned him respect at Bayer Leverkusen

Speaking about his time under the Spaniard, Xhaka pointed to Alonso's character, authenticity and pragmatism as decisive strengths, particularly in managing a squad filled with strong personalities and sizeable egos.

According to the midfielder, Alonso's calm authority and clarity helped create unity and accountability within the dressing room.

Alonso's tenure at Leverkusen proved transformational. Appointed in October 2022 with the club struggling, he swiftly reshaped the side into a disciplined, possession-based team capable of dominating opponents both domestically and in Europe.

The evolution culminated in a historic 2023/24 campaign, as Leverkusen claimed their first-ever Bundesliga title and lifted the DFB-Pokal, completing an unprecedented unbeaten domestic double.

That season also saw Alonso's side set a European record with a 51-match unbeaten run across competitions, a feat that firmly established his reputation as one of the game's most progressive coaches. He departed the club in 2025 having cemented a lasting legacy.

"He had no experience on the big stages. That is for sure. What he did have was charisma and character," Xhaka told DAZN.

"When he entered the locker room and started to speak, everyone was completely focused. Because they listened to him. Because every word he said was true. He didn't just repeat the words of others. He wasn't fake. He was authentic.

"And I think that when a player feels you are authentic, it doesn't matter if you win or lose. You keep earning their respect. All teams have egos, no doubt, but he didn't care about big names.

"He only cares about what he sees on the field. He wants to see you fight. And if you train well, he'll give you a chance. That is what I admire most about Xabi."
